Chris Thiemermann, MD, PhD, FRCP, FMedSci (Director since 1993, Chief Executive Officer since 2003) is a Professor of Pharmacology at Queen Mary University, London. After gaining a degree in medicine with distinction in Cologne (Germany), he joined the Institute in 1987.

He is a leading expert in the pathophysiology and therapy of myocardial infarction, renal failure and shock, and was a Senior Fellow of the British Heart Foundation.

He is currently a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Foreign Member of the Academy of Sciences of Portugal (Lisboa) and a Member of the Institute of Directors. According to the Institute of Scientific Information, Chris Thiemermann is one of the 100-most cited pharmacologists in the world (based on citations in the past 20 years).
